AUTHENTIC SCULPTURE BY FRANCIS BARNUM
SOLID PEWTER, WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

The Francis Barnum sculpture of John F. Reynolds is a Civil War collectible pewter piece honoring one of the most respected Union generals at the Battle of Gettysburg.

HISTORY:
Reynolds was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1820. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point after being nominated by future President James Buchanan. He graduated in 1841 and began a career in the U.S. Army.

Early military career

Before the Civil War, Reynolds:

Served in frontier assignments
Fought in the Mexican–American War
Earned praise for bravery and leadership
Later taught at West Point as an instructor

He developed a reputation as a calm, dependable, and highly professional officer.

Civil War service

When the Civil War began in 1861, Reynolds remained loyal to the Union. He quickly rose through the ranks and commanded troops in major campaigns including:

The Peninsula Campaign
Second Bull Run
Fredericksburg
Chancellorsville

At one point he was captured by Confederate forces during the Peninsula Campaign but was later exchanged and returned to command.

Gettysburg

Reynolds is most famous for his role at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.

During the opening phase of the battle:

Union cavalry under General John Buford was delaying Confederate forces west of Gettysburg
Reynolds hurried Union infantry to the field
He personally directed troops onto defensive positions near McPherson Ridge

While organizing his men near the front lines, Reynolds was struck and killed early in the battle. Historians still debate whether the fatal shot came from a Confederate sharpshooter, infantry fire, or possibly friendly fire.

Importance of his death

Reynolds was:

One of the highest-ranking officers killed at Gettysburg
Widely admired by both soldiers and fellow commanders
Considered by many historians to be among the Union Army’s best generals

Some historians believe his loss affected Union command organization during the crucial first day of Gettysburg.

Legacy

Today Reynolds is remembered for:

His professionalism and leadership
His key role in the Union defense at Gettysburg
His willingness to lead from the front

Monuments, statues, schools, and military memorials across Pennsylvania and Gettysburg honor his service and sacrifice.
